driveshaft carrier bearing

Hi, I am new here and need advice please. I have a 94 v6 camaro that I have had for 7 years now. I love driving it and haven't had a really big problem with anything until now. I started hearing a loud squealing noise coming from the back of my car. A friend of mine jacked up my car yesterday and looked at it and said he thought it was the driveshaft carrier bearing. I took it to a local repair shop today, and the mechanic said that indeed was it. He said that he can't replace that, that the whole driveshaft? driveline? had to be replaced. He said they don't make just the bearing, that the entire thing had to be replaced. He said it would cost about $850 plus less than an hour of labor. Is this true? I wasn't prepared to have that high of a problem/bill. He said I could try to find one at a junkyard for cheaper and he could put that on. Are there any other options? Is this the going price for what I need? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Replace it with a 1 piece drive shaft from any f body 82-92 they are all the same general length 42-44 inches, Dealerships even replace them with the LS1 driveshafts

Yeah, I've got to agree with that. Those center bearing shafts are often more trouble than they are worth. Get a good used shaft and put new u-joints in it, and get it balanced, or just take your shaft to a truck shop and have them make you a new 1-piece shaft. Either option will get your car back on the road with no trouble down the road, and no abnormal vibrations.

$850 + labor ? Don't ever bring you car to that shop again. The guy is trying yo rip you off.

Here is a link to the LS1 aluminum driveshaft. This is the best one they make and it's $230 brand new from GM. I don't know what those two piece driveshafts usually run but it shouldn't be $850.

Go to the junkyard and get a decent shaft, and do it yourself, It will take all of about 15 mins to do it.

Of course, you have a 94, which is incredibly off topic for a thirdgen website, so expect this to be locked quickly!

Yes that is the dealer list on those over engineered POS`s...three piece driveshaft that`s only 40 some inches long

Thank you everyone for the help. It is greatly appreciated. I have located one at a junkyard for $40 and a friend is going to install it for me. I'm so glad you guys could help. Sorry that this didn't belong on this board, I didn't realize that at the time. I had no idea who to ask for help.

It's the same drivetrain as a thirdgen. Let's not be silly.
