Questions about 4 speed swap: Should I? What to expect?

Unfortunatly i've gotta get a new engine first, but I would like a manual transmission. Right now I've got a 700R4.
I know a T5 would be the easiest swap, but my plan is for a little over 325 flywheel horsepower for now, maybe more later, and I will be racing the car. Dont wanna be replacing the 5 speed every few months, LOL
T56 would be nice for sure, but including everything for the complete swap, what is that....like 1500 bucks, maybe more, maybe less, but somewhere around there?
Ehh....Not really what I wanna spend now.
So, 5 speed = no good, 6 speed = too much, what is there left, 4 speed :-)
I know that most 4 speeds can handle a decent amount of power, so I shouldnt have to worry about that for now. From what I see, I could get a super t-10 for 400-500 bucks. I did search, and I know that the driveshaft is different, as well as some other stuff. How much would it end up costing to put something like the T10 or a muncie in? how much custom work is needed? I've got a carb'd 350 and most of the computer stuff isnt hooked up (obiously), what is involved in the swap? Any suggestions? Thanks,
-Chris

rebuild a WC T5, learn how to drive and it will be fine for a lot longer than "a few months."

Umm, I hate to say this, but even a good driver can break a T5 on a 1-2 powershift behind a bolt-on 6 cylinder. If it is a WC, it's a little better, but I still wouldnt trust it. I have seen a few behind 500+ HP, but it is the exception, not the rule.

To get back to the original question, if you want a 4 speed, which I think is awesome, btw, just make sure it has a 26 spline input shaft. Then, you could use a clutch/flywheel combo from a third gen. Bellhousing *could* work, as the bolt pattern and register size are the same, but, it has a 17* clock to it, which could make things difficult w/ mounting the trans mount. So you'd be safer and better off with a bellhousing designed for this swap, I believe by either McLeod or Lakewood(can't remember). Get the proper crossmember(stock '82-83, or Spohn), driveshaft, and all hyd. clutch components from a T5 car, and you should have a very reliable setup. Hurst makes a shifter for 82-83 third gens w/ a T10, which should work fine.
