how much power loss?

Ok the search feature isnt working for me right now, so I read through a bunch of old posts and didnt find anything. What I am wondering is, how much power does my slushbox rob? Are we talking like ten percent or fifty?

My dad insists it's no more than twenty, mechanics I have talked to say it's no less than thirty... Neither seem correct to me.

So what is it? and what qtr times would a given vehicle run with an auto versus a stick?

stock '86 model tranny.

I spoke with a dyno operator from ohio and he gave me some info. He claims that f-body's and vette's w 700r4 lose 22-23 % going from flywheel to rearwheel dyno. He also claimed that the stick cars only lose 14-15%.

From my old records with the G-Tech my time improved swaping to a t-5. But one thing to remember it's much harder to get a good launch with a stick then with a auto!

here's two runs for comparing
0-60
Auto---T-5
5.5---5.35
5.53---5.3

1/4mile
Auto---T-5
14.14@102.7---14.05@104.8
14.08@102.7---13.91@104.8

Drivetrain loss, guideline and not written in stone.
Manual=15/18%
Auto =20/25%

This for 3rd gen cars so others may be different.

Thanks. i figure between the better shifts, and the better launch, I'll be about even.

You guys have no idea how long I debated whether to buy another stick, or get an auto...

and again it is only guidline

even more so bein that trannies do not rob horsepower in a % manner

think of it this way
if lets say on a big semi the tranny robs 30% (using the % theory)
and that truck lets say puts out 1000lbs/ft
he is now puttin 700lbs/ft to the ground
but lets take that same tranny and put it on cheap *** car that makes 100lbs/ft
are you going to tell me it only now takes 30lbs/ft and leaves that same car with 70lbs/ft

so on one car eats 300lbs/ft and the other it eats only 30lbs/ft

I don't buy that
even more so if theyh are opperating in the same rpm range

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. There must be a cap.
