Megashifter install in a Firebird
Megashifter install in a Firebird
Maybe someone can shed some light on this. First of all , Im converting from a stick to an auto in a 92 Formula. (console mount)
When I bought the B&M megashifter for my car, I had planned on installing it with a stock F/B automatic console plate. Well after looking through the instructions, it said "will fit 82-92, except 88-92 Formula".
Now, I know that the lower console is the same in the cars, but what was the difference between a F/B or a T/A automatic console plate, that was different than a 88-92 Formula model.
Not only do I have to fab a floor plate to cover the existing hole from the manual, but now Im wondering , is the floor different from the autos, and furthermore, is the floor different between the auto Firebirds, and the auto Formulas too.
The shifter was too expensive to try to install, and not have it work. So Im passing on the aftermarket shifter until I can find out about this....Thanks ..Tom ( Tried contacting B&M on many occasions, just to leave my #, and never recieving a return call)

ok i am going to try and explain this the best i can....
basically the position that the shifter mouts in, doenst not allow for the shifter to fit threw the plate, so they you cut it up, and screw the b&m plate down...and it looks like crap
i put on in my 91 formula, and i am using the stock console top, and shift boot. what i did was i just got a little creative.... and it is by no means hacked. first dont use the mounts b&m gives you, it will let the shifter sit a inch or so lower and it is more comfortable. second, the white plastic on the bottom of hte shfit plate, which houses the shifter inidcator and holds the shift boot up, needs to be cut so that the shfiter will fit threw the slot for it to come out hte top. i took some epoxy and epoxy'd the indicator from the b&m into the stock indicator location, and i havnt had any problems. i will take a pic of hte finish product tomorow, but i am not going to tear it apart to get more pics.
it is possible to keep the stock look, but it is going to take some work. just get a little creative, and take your time. lay everyhting out, and get where the shifer has to be position wise to fit threw the stock shfter, and then drill holes and mount it.
if yo have any questions just im me on AIM at yzz89

No! I would not expect you to tear it apart for the pics. You basically answered what I needed to know, its an upper console plate thing. I wanted to be sure. I have no problem taking my time and fabricating it up to look super clean....Thanks for the info..Tom
