performance mods to 700r4?

putting together a '91 rs with the original 700r4, was wondering if i should use a lockup or non-lockup converter? the cam dictates the use of a 3500 stall speed, & the rear gear is 3.73:1. would really like the overdrive of the 4 spd, my other 3rd gens were converted to th350, & 3800 rpm at 60 sucks! but i'm also wondering about longevity when i'm cruising below the converters stall speed. help!? or a link to a site that can? thanx!!

definately use the lock up.when using a super hi stall dconvertor to work with a higher rpm range such as the one dictated by your camshaft.coupling eficiency below stall speed will be horrible allowing excessive engine rpm in all gear ranges.this is due to loss of efficiency of the torque convertors fluid coupling when stall speeds above 2600 rpms are needed.the lock up will spin the turbine shaft and crankshaft at the same rpm resulting in reduced cruise speed rpm, reduced engine noise, reduced fuel consumption, reduced engine and oil temperature, reduced engine wear etc.we make specialized 700r4 convertors that can be custom tailored to your application via a specific turbine and stator design matched to the engines power curve and its air ingestion characteristics as well as other things,.we call it a 10 /12 lockup.it is a 440t4 convertor with a 700r4 cover so you have the stock size lock up disc.very efficient.
