do you want an auto or a stick. if you want a stick i would go with a t56. they are a little costly but from what i hear they are worth it.

I guess that depends on about a million factors. How much can you afford to spend? Do you prefer auto or stick? How mechanically inclined are you?

Stock T56 transmissions can handle close to that much power. Also if you dont feel that it is up to the task, there are easy upgrades internally to help. From what I understand they are actually cheaper to upgrade than the 5 speeds. I guess that actually depends how much of an upgrade you are doing.

The stock LT1 T56 is officially rated at 450 lbs/ft or torque. Plenty of upgrade are available, but they are far from cheap. The big output shaft conversion kit is about $799. G-Force also offers improved gearsets and mainshafts for the T56, but the gears are over $1,000, and the mainshaft is several hundred. The upgrade parts for a T5 (5-speed) are about the same. The T56 is an inherently better design and stronger trans though.
Keep in mind that Viper and Corvette LeMans teams run a modified version of the T56 dubbed the TR6R. It's a T56 case with upgraded internals that mimic the stock parts except that the gears are straight cut (very noisey) and made from better material, plus the synchros use a dog face design (not streetable). These tranny routinely live with no failures behind engines making 750 HP and the same amount or more torque (those V-10 Viper engines are particularly brutal).
For an easy bolt in and durable trans the T56 is the way to go.
