700R4 years

what were the main differences in the 700R4 throughout the years? my tranny needs to be replaced, i'm lookin at this one that came out of an 84 WS6 Firebird (don't know my firebirds at all..not sure if this is a v6 or a v8 engine) but anyways, i am needin to replace my 700R4 in my 89 iroc....any thoughts?

Axle/Gears: 3.42
I know that they revised/improved the 700R4 some in '87 to correct some of the problems with them. I honestly can't remember exactly what they did, but I'd say that since you have an '89, I'd at least try to get an '87-up 700R4.

Axle/Gears: Dana 60, 4.10 w/spool
There have been numerous changes/upgrades to this trans affecting performance/durability up through '88. It is best to use an '88 or later trans core for rebuilding.
