91 Vette Tranny to 86 IROC-Z

Hi guys,

I have searched this and found a couple things to be facts I believe.

1. the corvette tranny bolts at the tail housing, thus no bolt hole provisions for the tranny to bolt to the existing crossmember on my IROC.

2. The corvette tranny is shorter or something of that nature.

Ok, is there anyway that having my existing 700R4 next to the 91 vette 700r4 I could change out the parts from the vet's tranny? Like just have the casing from the F-body one, but all the internals of the Vette tranny?

What do I need to do exactly step by step to make this work? Or is this completely impossible. The only reason I ask is that I have purchased a complete engine/tranny/computer combo from a wrecked 91 corvette and would like to use as much as I could from that car. Plus I believe my 86 tranny is only a 27 spindle where the vettes would have a 30 spindle.

Also is the vette tranny computer controlled? If so is it a problem if I use the ECM from the 91 with the external caseings changed? Since I plan to have this work by the beggining of spring suggestions are welcome!!!!!!!

The differences from the Corvette 700R4 and a 700R4, is the mounting location, the servo, the governer, and torque converter. You can exchange the internals over. Make sure you get a ATSG manual for the transmission you will be using. The 1987-1993 manual is the one you will need. Dont overlook any procedures, and you can even upgrade a few items, such as the 3-4 clutch pak, and reaction sun shell. (ushually upgraded w/ The Beast). You will need a few special tools too.

Also the vette computer is a speed density if it is a 91. The prom controls the TCC lockup, and unlock features at a given MPH.

So this is possible then. So basically it is not just a direct swap this is more of a 'weekend' project then. As long as I have that manual you stated I need in front of us I should be ok? thanks for the quick responses guys!

You must understand, This is not a walk through the park deal. Its not a typical timing chain replacement. But, its possible because we have done it. I would recommend getting an ATSG manual, and read, and re-read it several times. You will not be simply "switching parts", but, preforming a transmission overhaul. Also do a search on these forums for tyhe 700R4, and you will find some fantastic posts from people who have done this.

Cleaniness is the #1 thing that can make or break your project. You can double check all the clearances, and perform all the test, etc, but one piece of lint, plugging an orifice will make a pile of junk of your project. Using compressed air over cloth is mandatory.

This has been done with rewarding results, so do your homework, do searches, and you should have no problems. I would not consider it a weekend project though.

I am no authority on this, I am just telling you from my expierence in assisting in a rebuild. But I can say this, I did learn from it. Just like anything else in life, the more familiar somthing becomes, its not so bad after all.
