Downshift problems

I have a rebuilt 700r4 (5months old). The trans has never downshifted. Not from 4th to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd.....nothing. I went to the trans shop and he said that he cant make it downshift because of the linkage on the carb wont fully extend the cable. What makes the car downshift and what can keep it from doing so.

Also, because it wont downshift, when the car goes into OD you cannot acccelerate and the car will shake if you try to. The only was to get out of OD once it enters it at about 35-40mph is to take the gear selecter from OD to D. THis is rediculous. Please help! Can the shaking be a converter issue? THe trans cost $1350 to be done and now its the slowest car ever with no downshifting.

Does anybody know anything about these transmissions? My post is really lonely. Come on guys. Please help out.... I have searched endlessly but very few have downshift probs.

I just want to clarify. The trans does downshift when stopping at lights and all. It just wont downshift when trying to pass or accelerate. Not even at WOT. THis sucks when stuck in OD or 3rd at 40MPH.

Sounds like some guy is blowing smoke up your rear. Is this a converted to carb car? If so which carb is on it? Are you still using the TBI tv cable. It sounds like your TV valve is sticking or the cable is not opening it. Does the transmission ever hold out on a gear? Does it shift at the same speed/RPM regardless of accelerator position? Has anyone tried to adjust the TV cable? I can get downshifts into second at 70 mph in my van by flooring the pedal. Takes a correctly adjusted TV cable with the correct geometry at its mounting. Also perhaps your governor is sticking?

Maybe your TV cable is streched not allowing it to fully open the TV valve when the carb is at WOT.

I have adjusted the calbe many times trying to get it to downshift. the car does hold out shifts to over 5000rpm at wot. It does not have problems upshifting at all. Just no downshifts with use of the accelerator. The car was a carbed LG4 originally. I guess i can post what kind of carb i have, but where can i find the ID number on it. its a rochester cc qjest remanufactured by holley.

Does this mean replacing the cable may fix it up? How can i check to see if the cable is stretched or just flat out too long. Bring it to wot with the pedal and feel the slack in the cable??

If you bring the throttle to WOT and feel of the cable it should have next to no deflection meaning it is tight. Sounds like something else though since you can hold your shifts out to 5,000 by pushing the pedal. Sounds like the TV boost valve is sticking. I would take it back to the transmission guy and tell him he is full of it. Maybe not exactly like that but you get the idea. Carbed car with a Q-jet is surely pulling the TV cable enough. The shop messed up somewhere in the valve body!!

I am having the same problem you are, except that mine won't hold a gear at WOT. It started when I switched from TBI to carb. My uncle, who owns a tranny shop, told me it is either a stretched TV cable, or a stuck TV valve in the valve body, or of course a misadjusted cable. You might want to purchase a new TV cable to be sure that isn't your problem.

This is why I have decided to rebuild my own tranny. Too many retards that were hired to work at transmission shops.
