will a 1993 v-6 10 bolt fit my application?

Hey guys,

I don't post much on the tranny-drivetrain board, but I have heard that you guys are pretty awesome when it comes to this stuff. Let me give you a little background first and then get to my question.

I have a 1992 RS that's in fantastic shape. I'm in the process of building a carbed 383 stroker to replace my tired old 305TBI.

The motor will obviously be stroked and bored .030 over to make the 383ci of displacement; I will put AFR 195 or 210 heads on top with a 700-800 cfm carb and a moderately tall cam for street and strip use. My goal is to put upper 400HP to the rear wheels.

I just bought my street/strip transmission rebuild kit from probuilt, (which is awesome by the way) so I am in the process of rebuilding that right now.

I recently also bought a set of ZR1 vette wheels from a local kid. This is the main reason I want a 4th gen rear end, I want to fit the rear wheels on without spacers. I currently have the stock unit with open 2.73's

Last night I talked to a guy locally who is selling the rear end out of his 1993 v-6 bird. To the best of my knowledge that means that it's a 10 bolt. He claims that the rear has 3.23's and no posi unit. It's also got the stock drums still on it.

My questions to you all are...
1) Will the rear end be a direct swap into my 92?
2) I really would like 3.73's and posi. Is it worth me even considering keeping the rear like that, or am I going to blow it up in the first 3000 miles?
3) Will the 10 bolt even be strong enough to handle the 383?
4) If/when I decide to rebuild the rear, can you suggest a good place to get the parts I need to support my 383?

As always, thank you guys! I couldn't be doing my 25th anniversary makeover without the help of everyone on TGO!

any 4th gen f body rear will be a direct swap to a 3rd gen f body, other than the width issue and brakes, but it'll all bolt up. you can do a lot to strengthen it so it'll last. randy's is a good source of parts, jegs, summit, and most any place. as for how well or how long it holds up will depend a lot on how you apply the power.

What width issue are you speaking of?

The ZR1's are 17x11 in the back in 17x9.5 in the front.

I do not know the backspacing though.
