i'm not quite sure that is out of a third gen. all of them used the spring/clutchpack design. it may be out of a fourth gen.

It's probably out of a S truck, although a few of them found their way into these cars in the early years of their existence. That's the dreaded useless POS known as the Eaton Grenade-Lock (Gov-Lock according to its mfr).
It acts like an open diff, i.e. no clutching action whatsoever, until the difference between the RPMs of the 2 axles exceeds about 100 RPM. At that point it attempts to lock up. Which means, no posi action whatsoever from a stop.
Obviously, quite good for a 4WD type situation, in mud or something, where there's no traction; but a VERY VERY BAD design for pavement. It WILL turn itself to shrapnel if used in a high-power application on asphalt or concrete. Even a 6-cyl like the ones in S trucks will grenade them easily.
DO NOT buy it thinking it's going to give you better traction off the line.

and try scrubbing it with a toothbursh and some gear lube, the surface rust should come off and the gear lube will sink into the poruous carrier and you won't have to worry about it. when i cleaned off my old open carrier with brake clean and then soappy water it got surface rust with in 5 minutes. scrubbed it down with a toothbrush and gear lube and it looks like new
