What's a good ZZ4 engine stall converter?

Hey guys,

Since the ZZ4 is a popular crate motor I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions on what stall speed converter to use with this engine. It has 405lbft of torque at 3500 rpm.

My particular car is a 92 camaro with 3.23s and a 670cfm Holley.

Thanks!

i would do a 3000 stall or 3200 stall and get one that is lock up. I have an Edge 2800 on my stock L98 and it rips with 2.77 gears. it should be great with 3.27's later on. its a great converter. worked for me and many others. they custom built it. check out www.edgeracingconverters.com

A very good question. My current cam, with 272/284 duration, 216/228 @ .050", .454/.480" lift, 112 LSA, computer-compatible, flat-tappet, has an advertised operating range of 2200-5200 RPMs according to the manufacturer, Crane Cams. The supplier of my converter said it would stall at about 2000 RPMs. What I have found with my 305, however, is the converter stalls at about 2300 RPMs, but the power really "comes in" at 3000 RPMs (and pulls hard to 5500 RPMs, revs readily to 6300 RPMs). So, neither the info from the cam manufacturer nor the converter supplier quite matched up to reality.

Now, I'm planning on increasing displacement, increasing lift, decreasing duration, & going from flat to roller tappet, so wondering if my current converter will either a) stall higher due to increased torque output, or b) be about right with an engine/cam that should move the powerband lower than what it is currently. Maybe it will be c) all of the above, which will make it "perfect".

So, if anyone actually has a ZZ4, please let us (me) know where the power really "comes in".

I've got the ZZ4 crate motor in my car. The motor is unmodified with a 650cfm Holley SA and exhaust headers.

Just like the published torque curve says, the motor REALLY comes alive at 3500RPM, which is where the peak torque is. After that it just keeps pulling up to 5000 or so.

So I called up Midwest converters this week to inquire about a torque converter.

After the guy I talked to took down my car's info he recommended a 3000 stall with lockup. He said they make a lot of converters for guys with crate motors, so hopefully he's right about this.

The converter is a 10" lockup unit with a 2 year warranty, lifetime warranty on the stator and 1 free re-stall or cleaning should your tranny explode and pollute the converter
