Okay, along with my new engine, i got what I was told was an Auburn Locker w/ 3.23's.....wonderful, i need the $$ badly so i'll sell it. My friend looked at it and thought it looked wierd, i called the guy back up and double checked, he assured us it is a locker.....my friend still disagrees. I have no idea who's right, i trust my friend way more than the guy i bought it from (that guy was sorta STRANGE), but i'd like some more opinions. Is this, or is this not a locker.
Thanks,
-Chris

It aint a locker thats for sure. Looks like a std. open (non posi) carrier setup to me.

Here's a pic of my locker installed... http://community.webshots.com/photo/...89814258GTAYZu

and here's the locker parts out of the box before I installed it...

A limit slip unit (AKA posi) uses clutchs, and/or springs, to apply both wheels, it gives the wheel with the least amount of traction, the most torque. I don't see no clutchs in that one. It could be some style of newer limit slip unit, but I aint sure cause i'm use to the old types. But I know it aint a locker, and really I don't even think its a posi unit

A locker is a mech. "gear drive" that has 4 main parts, that replace the spider and side gears. Those parts has teeth made onto them, and the locker pushes together and teeth lock, so you get a fully locked rear end when under heavy load. It puts the same amount of torque to both wheels

Yup, that's yerbasic "open" one-wheel-peeler.

Here's what an Auburn looks like. That isn't one obviuosly. Or, it's missing some parts.

I hope you didn't pay money for that, as if it was some kind of special thing or other; if you did, somebody ripped you off.

Only if you have a 10 bolt 2.73 ratio in your car now and this came with the pinion gear and the axles.

SLP if you can still get them other then that I'm partial to the power trax.

Looks like an Auburn Gear limited slip diff. to me (NOT a locker), but it's missing the springs and plates that go between the side gears. This unit uses cones instead of clutches.

Just do a search for the casting numbers on the diff. They should be right near that orange paint spot somewhere.

It might have spun both tires if they were off the ground.

That's an open diff. It's basically worthless, unless you have one that needs replaced and you're too broke to buy a posi.

Has any body welded the spider gears together? kinda ******* and a risk of breaking the axles.

Yeah, I bet it will spin em both, probly even lay 2 marks down.. They won't be even, same lenght or color, but it will be 2 marks. A limit slip and locker will lay em down the same lenght, and color

The reason why it will lay down 2 marks is....
when you do ALOT of 1 wheel burn outs you wear the parts hard. When an open rear wears, the point of wear from burn outs is the spider and side gears, along with the crossshaft. I was showing somebody those pics today, and was telling them about the wear on the cross shaft in that pic.

In the 1st pic to the left, look at the mark on the crossshaft down close to the bottom. The shaft should be clean, smooth, and not a spot on it. That one aint. It's worn.

All that you have there is a well used and worn open carrier. I don't even see the pinion gear, without the pinion the ring gear is useless too. The ring and pinion has to match

Best bang for the buck in posi/lockers is the SLP take out units if you can still get them, but then you have to know how to check and set up a rear end, or pay to have it done.

Next best deal is the $300 powertrax lock right locker. It installs in less than an hour and anybody that can half way read and turn a wrench can install it

It sure looks like Auburn Gear's symbol cast into the end of the diff to me:

I wasn't aware that they made an open diff...

If you take that end plate off (the 5 torx head bolts), you might be surprised at what you'll find.

That is definitely the Auburn logo. It was visible in the other pcs too of course. One of the first things I looked for.

There's numbers stamped on the side of it. IIRC 9 digits, arranged as 3-3-3. That's its model number. Get that # and give Auburn a call and see what they can tell you. That's what I do when I have their product and want to know something about it. They're reasonably easy to get hold of on the phone. Get the # off their web site www.auburngear.com
