can 3 series gear fit to 2 series carrier?
i have searched, some say you need 3 series carrier, some say you can used shims, and so some say you can buy 3 series gears for 2 series carrier. what is true and not? i want to put 3.42 gears in my 4th gen posi 2.73.

You don't have to replace the carrier; even though that would be the smart thing to do. You can either use a spacer, or you can buy the "special" gears.
I'd recommend the spacer.
Not because there's anything wrong with the "special" gears, like they don't work right or cost more or have trouble or whatever; but rather, because if you use those, you are forever required to use a 2 series carrier. Where, with a spacer, if you ever get the right carrier to go with your gears, you just leave the spacer out.

well what i read on carriers was on general info, not specific as to my question, so i posed the specific question for someone that has specific knowledge on the subject to answer, which i received. thanx for asking.

When i had my 2 series carrier rebuilt i had them put in thick cut richmonds that were 3.73's and they work like a champ. This is a lot better than using shims. Or if u watch on some of the 4th gen boards they will sale the whole chunk for in 150 range which will be the whole center section. Ive seen the 3.42 slp's get sold this way a lot.
