Right now im lookin at buying an 87 GTA 5.7L TPI. its an auto and the tranny is makin a wierd noise. my mechanic told me it could last a week or it could last 5 years(its makin a wierd squeak/rubbing/not to sure, noise). my question is could i use the tranny out of my 87 Trans Am 305 TPI which is also auto and stick it in the GTA(both have overdrive). im thinking it will work just fine but i just wanted to make sure from all u pros out there. also does anyone have an idea what transmission is in my T/A and GTA? all help is greatly appreciated, in the help of my descision to buy this GTA...my dream car...the GTA has 106,000Kms(66,000Miles) my trans am has 263,000(170,000+miles) but the tranny was rebuilt within 100,000KMS ago

You will be fine. MNake sure to swap the speedo gears and sensor if nescessary.

thanks for the input. one thing i was thinking isboth cars have digital guages. the trans am redlines at 4500 and the GTA redlines at 5500 (if i remember correctly) will the Trans Am transmission still be able to support that?

are the goveners going to be the same? I didn't know if there was a difference in shift points and/or calibrations between the two engines.
