400HP Transmission?

Ok I am dropping in an unknow motor yet (havn't decided) in my 91 RS. My car currently has the stock automatic tranny and I presume with the new motor I will need a new tranny
(currently a stock TH-700R4). Now even with the power going to be around 400hp+ I still want to keep the tranny an automatic one. Now heres where I am trying to figure out where to go from. Should I drop in something like a TCI TH-700R4 or something like a TH-400 or a TH-350. I would like to be able to throw shift the car but I still want the car to be just as reliable if she turns into a daily driver again. Now is there any perks to a certain one for something with 400hp and used a lot more at normal speeds then track conditions? Is there a reason why I would want an overdrive transmission?

I aploligize if there stupid questions, I recently ditched two fords and have joined the GM community. (No I didn't buy the fords they where hand-me-downs)

Thanks,
Mike

I have had terrible luck with tci products. I do not recommend them. I am a fan of the 700r4 overdrive transmission. Great first gear ratio and overdrive also. 350 and 400 trannies are stronger in stock form. No overdrive though. If I were building a drag car I would go with a 400. A street strip car and I would use the 700r4.

Some people swear by the 700's, others swear at them. I have been running a stock 700 with great results. On spray it has gone hi 10's but often runs bottom 12's on motor. It usually cuts a 1.625 60' time but has cut a 1.505 for a best. My trans has been assembled by a friend 10 years ago. No fancy parts in it. Just a blueprinted box and a shift kit. I wish I had installed a heavy duty reaction shell ($50). Where you buy a trans is your call. I now do my own. Probuilt is a sponsor on this forum and he has a good reputation. My budget is always tight so I cannot afford a serious trans. They run from $1500- $3500 through out the country for a "top notch, heavy duty" model.

Ok so if I use the stock trans I should have it rebuilt and reinforced on some common parts? Sorry for all the questions.

There is a ton of aftermarket stuff for a 700. Pump upgrades, hardened input shaft, 5 pinion planetaries, "beast" reaction shell. Heavy duty clutch plates and bands are available as well. If I were building a 400-450 hp 700, I would use a "beast, raybestos paper clutches and band and a shift kit. I would also blueprint the clearances in the clutch packs. Most good shops do. I would install a b&m shift kit, Not because they are great, but they work well for me and I like the hard shift. I have never seen the planetaries or input shaft break on a lower hp motor. I have also been using a stock 10 vane pump with no issues yet. I build transmissions for hobby. My advise/opinion is just that....opinion. I install floorcovering for a living. It works well for me though.

www.bowtieoverdrives.com

They carry 700-r4's and the 200-4r's as well.

GREAT customer service, and they can send you quotes for about any option available.

They test them in a car before they ship to you.

Good Luck!
Tom
