Effects of TV Cable vs Governor Question
Do both the TV Cable and Governor effect shift points? I know the TV Cable does, but I would like a description of what exactly the governor does. I know it spins on the output shaft and what it looks like.
I ask because I installed a new 700R4 the other week. At all throttle points below WOT (1/4, 1/2, 3/4) the trans shifts perfect. But at WOT it won't shift 1 - 2.
Interestingly enough, once in 2nd and at WOT, it will shift into 3rd.
Does this sound like a TV Cable setting or would playing with the weights on the Governor help this?
Thanks,
Adam

There's no "setting" of the TV cable. It has one correct position, and that's it.
The governor circuit increases in pressure as the speed of the output shaft. The TV circuit increases in pressure as the throttle is opened. As a gross oversimplification, when the pressure in the governor circuit exceeds the pressure in the TV circuit, valves move and an upshift happens.

Thanks Apeiron - When people speak of adjusting the TV Cable up where it connects to the throttle, they're searching for the one correct position? If this is true, I have not found that position and must adjust until the WOT shift from 1 to 2 comes. Correct?

A search will turn up the proper method(s) to adjust the TV cable. Basically the TV cable should be fully extended when the throttle is fully open.
Sorry, I don't know if the TV cable adjustment is causing your problem.

each vehicle weight, engine, and final drive ratio require a specific combination of shift valve springs, shift valve land diameter, governor primary and secondary weights and springs, shift tv valve diameter,tv plunger with part throttle and full throttle detent passages for proper performance.this means that although you can swap one 700r4 with another the wide open throttle shift points, part throttle shift points etc will happen at different times either improving performance or reducing it depending on its resting place.if you took one governer from a vehicle that shifted at 4800 rpms at wot with a 3.73 rear and installed it in a vehicle with a 3.42 trear itll still shift at 4800 rps ,HOWEVER THE ROAD SPPED REQUIRED TO ROTATE THE GOVERNER TO ITS WIDE OPEN POSITION WILL CHANGE BECAUSE A 3.42 RATIO WILL PRODUCE A HIGHER ROAD SPEED IN MPHOUR BEFORE THE 3.73 WILL.with that being said the tv cable is speaking a hydraulic signal to the valve body that is a signal of engine load based on throttle position or tv cable pull.this signal is then brought to a valve and spring where it fights avehicle speed signal which is sent to the valve body from the governor.this is then put against a specific diameter valve land, precalibrated spring etc and the calibration desides upshift rpm downshift rpm kickdown based on these signals.our methos of adjust is factory spec and then slighty looser if its late at part throttle or passing gear comed in too early.this is because the wide open position of the plunger is from 7/8 of its travel to full stroke.this means that although you are a few clicks loose from the factory setting you still get max line at wot and forced kickdowns by oopening the detent passage on the pluinger.put the selector in manual second and accellerate slow .as soon as the trans shifts into second stab the pedal and make sure it goes back to first.ifitdoesnt tighten the cable until you get the kickdown and your in good shape.
