Speedo Gear Woes
Curse GM's tiny clips. I'm in the middle of swapping the speedo gears on my tranny to match my new rear axle. Of course, I broke that tiny little clip that holds the gear to the transmission output shaft. I'm assuming I can just get another one from GM, correct? But my main concern is that the gear that goes on the other piece (don't know what it's called) doesn't fit as snugly as the original one. Why would this be? Is it supposed to be a little loose, or did I somehow get the wrong part? Thanks folks.

If the plastic speedo gear does not crack during removal it should be fine to be reused. The last time I tried to buy that metal clip they came in a 25 pack. My local dealer would not sell me 1. Only if I agreed to buy the 25 pack would they order it. Hopefully your dealer is stocking them so you do not have this problem. A local tranny shop will cough one up if you ask. There are 2 possible holes that this clip can fit in. 1 is corvette only. The other is all other models. Be sure to hit the correct one.

Ok, thanks for the advise on the clip. I'm kind of leary about the other gear, since it's loose on the spindle it attaches to. Any ideas about that?

The gears are dirt cheap. It should fit kinda snug. I would change it if in doubt. If you squint you will see a tooth count and possibly a part number. Driven gear is about $8 from the dealer. They are color coded also. If new one is same color it is the same.

Yeah, I bought a different drive gear (and the gear to the tranny output shaft) since I changed rear axle ratios. Since my new drive gear doesn't fit snug, you'd recommend buying a new one? Maybe the dealer will let me test it before I take it home. I think I'll double check that part #.
