one legger dif to a two legger?

i have an 86 z-28. ive got this ***** out 400hp 356 in the car now, but my traction off the line is hindered by the one tire that spins going forward. at this point i do not have the money to buy a posi rearend, nor do i want to buy a posi unit and put it in the this rearend. my question is; are there any "backyard" techniques or even sensible techniques for turning my one legger into a makeshift posi? it will have to put up with lots of power and torque so keep that in mind. any suggestions or directions for a path would be greatly appreciated.

Do what they do on monster garage, weld the gears together.

Honestly, no. I understand how you feel wanting a posi but are low on funds, but do not resort to welding the spider gears. I know it's tempting, but I promise that you will do more damage than good. You WILL break axles and ruin your tires in no time, not to mention the increased danger in poor weather conditions. Just start saving up now for a posi, it will all be worth it in the end.

If, and only if, your car is a track-only car, should you consider welding the spider gears or installing something like a spool.

But, one a good note, try hitting up the junkyards for 3rd and 4th gen rears, you should be able to find a factory posi for a decent price (around $100). If you already have a 10 bolt and a 3-series carrier, it should be a fairly simple swap (there's tons of info on this in past threads, FWIW).

Good luck

just remember stock 86 axles are 26 spline, newer ones are 28. I'm in the hunt too. I believe I'll have to get new axles when I do find a good posi because I haven't seen a 3 series 26 spline posi in a while. Most on ebay are 28 spline.

what about this spool thing:

"Benm109:r installing something like a spool."

what is this? and what would be the pros and cons of such an item. and how hard is it to install?

i realize that i should save and do this the correct way, and i will. but for now i need a quick fix. the is only driven about 3000miles a year, on the road for 6months a year and only sees sunny days. it is my baby; if you will. so wet traction safety is not too much of an issue, allthough i have been caught in the occassional sun shower, so i will keep it in mind.

z28crazy, you have a 10 bolt, correct? Just wanting to make sure.

A mini-spool or spool just locks the 2 axles together, which is the same thing welding the spiders gears does. I really don't know much about them except for what they do. Mini-spools usually run about $100. Check out Summit Racing and Jegs online and take a look at what they offer.

Heh, I’ve been running a spooled setup in my 9 bolt (welded the side cones in the posi) on the street for about 2 years now… I use the thing as a daily driver on most days with decent weather…

Which posi do you want? Auburn? Eaton? Both are still available, let me know what gear ratio you are running? I stock some units, and have access to the others that you want. I also have the install kits, and the bearing sets. Call 909 4780370 & let me know?
