is this rare?
i have an 88 iroc with a 350 tpi. an aluminum driveshaft. 4 wheel disks with aluminum calipers. and a 9 bolt posi rear end. is this a 1le? i have no door jam tag so its tough to say. does anyone know where i can get any more info on this rear end? all i know is its a full floating rear witha 7.75 inch ring gear and 28 splined axels. it would definitly be worth rebuilding correct? over buying a 12 bolt for 2,400 ? i highly doubt its a 1LE but i know the 9 bolt isnt common
No, it is not a 1LE car. 9-Bolts were common with 350TPI cars until 1989. The gear ratios were 2:77 and option of 3:27 and both required the Limited slip option G80. I highly dought you have the 11.655 dia rotors & and Aluminum calipers on the rear. These came out in 1989. If you have them then the rear may have been replaced. Picture of 89 PBR rear brakes.
The 9-Bolt is a stronger rear and worth keeping, so why do you want to rebuild it?? If nothing is wrong with it, just change the lube and run with it, if its not broke why mess with it.
Do a search and you will find more info on the 9-Bolt then you will never want to know.

this is a big mistake many people say. yes 1988 did infact have the pbr rear brakes (it was a mid year production) this goes along with the vats not being in 1988 cars which it was just as an option
to the question It could be a 1le but, not very likely . as far as I know only firebirds could be had as a 1le in 1988 and are very very rare only 2 known of.
your combo for an 1988 camaro is not a "common" one but, not even close to rare I would venture it was a late production 1988 camaro

If I'm not mistaken if you have A/C that would be a dead give away that it is not a 1LE, also you said disc all around but not wether the fronts were single or dual piston.

There is a 99.9% chance that it is not a 1LE but if you really want to know check your RPO codes for "1LE".

Parts for a 9-bolt, you got to be kidding. For your info parts for that 9-bolt are the rarest thing on your car. Just run with it, the only way its going to break is if you abuse that rare rear.

yeah i dont really care if it is a 1le either. but the thing is that it has been abuse and i wanted to rebuild it with stronger parts. on www.9bolt.com they have a package that includes the posi unit 3.73 ring and pinion and the installation kit for 900 bucks. i would like to do this but i dont want to replace the posi unit with a stock cluth pack style posi. kinda comfused as to what type of posi this rear had?
You should read up on the information on this site about the 9-bolt rear and then you will know why parts are hard to find & expensive. One other important note! 9-Bolt & 10-Bolt parts are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.

yeah i know that the parts are not interchangeable. but the thing is i can build a strong 9 bolt for about 1,000 -1,200 or i could built a weak *** 10 bolt or buy a 12 bolt for 2,400 ..............which would you choose .............9 bolt id say. my only big concern is what diff i can get for this rear end. i dont want a clutch pack style. i would like a torsion. but i dont know what is out there i cant find many aftermarket carriers for this rear any ideas?

Nine-bolt pros: Stronger then the ten-bolt. One less bolt to remove when taking to cover off.
Cons: Almost a total lack of aftermarket. Hard to get parts for, unless you find one in a junkyard - but then you risk getting just that, junk. Ten-bolts can be built up, that or you could just drop a Ford 9" in there, but you need to run some serious power to need a 9"...
I'm going to keep both of mine, but if they go, well, I'll burn that bridge when I get there. I think the 3.73 gears from that site are stock gears off another application, but don't quote me on that.
