Loss of drive in 700r4
Okay, i got the tv cable to ratchet through finally, needed more force on the throttle linkage.Anyway the problem as described in my previous post is still happening.I tried driving in manual low and when i backed off the throttle i had engine braking, but apart from that, there is no upshifting at all. Someone said the problem could be a stripped governor gear is this likely?.Please help.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Manual low? It shouldn't upshift....
The last time I looked at a service manual ('87) it showed the engaged clutches (in the clutch application chart) for both 1st and 2nd gears in both 2nd and L gear selections.
I thought that was odd, because you wouldn't want it to shift into second while holding manual low, and mine certainly doesn't. (Don't know the trans year or original car it came from, I think a 90-something caprice.)
If you stripped the governor gear, you'd have late, poor or no upshifts in all gears.
What's the original problem?

Edit: Oh, just reread the thread title. You only have 1st gear in all foward ranges? Time for a pressure test... Or just pull out the governor.

700r4 Loss of drive
Thanks blackbird. When i drove in manual low.speed would increase to approx 30 mph, however in all other forward gears, top speed was only 10 mph, max.engine speed &rev increase is normal, but with no corresponding increase in vehicle speed,as though tranny is in neutral.Anyway, getting it checked out next week,i just hope its nothing too serious, like a complete rebuild.
cheers,

I'm on my way out, otherwise I'd try to type something more useful... but see what other diagnosis you can do without taking anything apart.
Pressure test
Stall test
'Garage' Shift test (jack the rear up)
Etc.

Loss of drive with 700r4
Scott.thanks for the suggestions.I jacked up the rear and seemed to have fairly normal wheel speed increase, relative to increase in engine revs.Went through all gears and all seemed normal from a visual aspect,so i went for a drive and car drove fine. Told my mechanic and he said the governor must have been sticking, but i'm still not sure what caused the problem.Anyway a good result in the end,and saved some dollars which is always good.
Thanks again.
Simon.
