what tranny is for me?

hello all! I'm switching my old sucky v6, for a vortec headed, xe262 cammed, 355. now i need a manual tranny that can take the power and occasional launch. i know of the t56, but the engine i have is a 2peice main. So i would need that special $350 flywheel correct? and Finding a t56 is a pain for a decent price. Are there any other options for a manual. I dont care about 5 or 6 speed, as long as it has overdrive and will fit my car of course. I'm just wondering because right now I'm only looking at t56s. Thanx

First, Centerforce & McLeod both make conversion flywheels to allow you to run the T56 on a 2-piece RMS engine. I'm running one right now in my car, so that's not big deal. Cost is about $350 for steel.

Second, the T56 is an expensive trans, and the conversion is not goign to be cheap. Figure $2,750 at least going from auto to manual. You might save $250 going from a T5 to a T56. The price to play is steep, but that's what you pay for a nearly indestructable trans.

Third, other options would be a beefed up T5, or a Tremec.

What are you planning to do with the car? Street, street/strip, street only, autoX, etc? With more info I can give you a more educated answer.

sorry ive been gone. but im mostly just street/strip...daily driver deal. ive kinda looked at tko-500 for 1700bux. thats way cheaper than your estimate of 2700bux. i figure at most for the tko-500 would be 2200 in my car. hmm any info would help in researching so yea.

The problem with the Vette LT1 trans is that it won't have the mounting provisions for the torque arm. You'd need to change the entire tailshaft housing, and they are like $350 my cost. List is over $400.

Some things to keep in mind with any trans swap:

Torque arm

Driveshaft

Crossmember

Those 3 things can really add to the cost of the swap if you have to change or modify them. I'm not sure about the Tremec swap with these three things. With a T56 you can reusue the stock TA and DS, and the crossmember is like $150 ready to bolt in.
