Are the gear teeth rustred as well? If they are the best thing you could do is through them away.

The wear surfaces on the gears are carefully machined. Each gear set is lapped before shipping from the factory. This ensures that the ring and pinion gears perfectly match each other for a quiet and long life. Anything that damages the wear surfaces of the gears is likely to cause excessive wear and noise.

If you have heavy rust the pitting will cause the gears to drag and reduce your horsepower transmitted to the rear wheels. Without a doubt, your gears will produce a great deal of noise and have a very short life span.

Throw the gears away without a second thought about keeping them.

If you are looking for cheap 3.73 gears, don't forget to look at the S-10 trucks. I think there is a better chance of finding one with a 3.73 than an F-body.
