posi swap aftermath

hey guys

i swapped a auburn limited slip into my 84 z28. i repalced the carrier bearings and was told that it was necessary to preload the new bearings so i reinstalled the factory shims plus added .004 to the ring gear side to tighten up BL. well now its been about 500 miles and i hear this groaning at like 55-70 mph it only occurs at "float" as in only enough throttle to maintain speed. i changed the fluid ..no differnece. other than that it is flawless no noise at slower or higher speed.

anyway would i be better of the remove the .004 shim and just run the factory shims this would bring back lash to .012 or so

what do you think???

ps i reused the 3.73 that were already in the car GM gears

I went through 4 rear ends and did the same swap you did-4x's, only jumped up gear size the last time.

Just reuse the factory shims, the first three rears I did that and it was quite. The last rear end I added .006 since gears were worn and I wanted all the slop out of there. I got the same gear noise you describe.

you shouldn't increase the carrier shim total thickness. you should change the arrangement of the thickness to get the back lash you desire. instead of adding .004 to the total you should of moved .004 from one side to the other.
