Transmission: A bad one & a good one
Axle/Gears: A weak one & a chained one
A whining noise...from the trans?? Are you SURE it's coming from the trans? Normally it's the rear-end that makes whining noise. Now, my old AOD on my mustang however whined downshifting from 4th to 3rd....never figured out why, but the new trans doesnt. But that trans was failing very bad and had slipping problems, I just assume it had bad parts...maybe the noise was coming from the band itself...
