rear end switch??

i have a 91 305 rs camaro. the rear end i have new is the 2.73 std rear end. and i have a friend that is willing to sell me the whole rear assembily. drum rotors, shafts and all. it is off either a 85 or 86 camaro. not sure which one. and it is limited slip. i was just wondering if this would fit onto my car, and how i would go about doing this. any help would be great. thank you. -jon

All third gen diffs from 82-92 are direct bolt in to any other third gen. Even a fourth gen diff is a direct bolt in however the fourth gen diff is about 2" wider on each side so proper backspace wheels are required.

The only difficulty in the swap would be if you're swapping from drum to disk brakes or the other way around. The park brake cables are different.

Your 91 is a better diff since it will have a 7-5/8" ring gear compared to the earlier 7-1/2". Your 91 will also have 28 spline axles and the earlier ones have the smaller 26 spline. It would be better if you just buy a new posi and the gear ratio you want and install it into your diff.

they are both drum brakes. and the reason i am switching them is because this one is a limited slip and my current isn't. also i am only getting it for 75 dollars. my friend needs money, thats why it is cheap.

The '79 diff won't work in your car. Nothing is the same.

The housing is designed for a leaf spring car and yours uses a torque arm system.

The second gen diff is too wide even if you could find some way to adapt it.

The second gen 10 bolt is a 8.5" ring gear so you couldn't even take the gears and posi out to use in your 7-5/8" 10 bolt diff.
