Inconsistent ticking noise from transmission

Transmission: 200C
Axle/Gears: 3:73
Inconsistent ticking noise from transmission
Car- 82 Trans Am
Tranny- 200C Three speed auto
Most of the time it will make a ticking noise, as if there's a flap of plastic hitting the teeth of the flywheel. The noise adjusts with the rpm level, and seems to disappear when the car is in neutral idling(even when going 40). A mechanic looked at it but didn't notice anything wrong. What's happening?
