Let off throttle to get 3rd
This is actually a really old post, but I'm still having the same problem 1 year later
Recently replaced th350 with TPI 700R4. At dragstrip I shift manually at 7000 rpm Trans works awesome, but have to let up on throttle when manually switching to 3rd to get it to engage. This is loosing a couple tenths. If I don't let off, I've seen rpm's climb to almost 8 grand. If I get on and off the throttle a time or two it slams 3rd and still musters a high 11. Why do I have to let up? What can remedy this?

Sounds like a valve body problem not a governor.
I am not trying to thread-jack but I think I am having the same or similar problem with the 700r4 in the G20 right now. I think this might help you a little in finding your problem. On mine it will shift 1-2 at 5,300 then hold to over 6,000 when it bangs the rev limiter. Can't figure it out. I have also had it downshift into second doing about 95 as well. Not a good feeling obviously. I am thinking I am going to have to take the valve body apart and see what is going on. I am thinking the 2-3 shift valve is not working right in mine. Seems strange that 1-2 is dead on and 2-3 is off. I even stuck the stock van governor back in it. 1-2 at 3,800 and could not get 3rd under WOT. If it went into third it immediately dropped to second. No amount of TV cable adjustment has helped in my case. Perhaps it might in yours. When I check the line pressure it is dead on. Leaves the 2-3 shift valve. I'll let you know when I get it shifting correctly as it might be of interest to you.

Thanks. I'd really like to know what's up! Glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem. I've emailed TPI trans because they built this thing. I'm really hoping they get back to me. I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Mine did this for about a year and half and then today it wont even go into fourth or third. It burnt the 3-4 clutch pack. Not sure if they are related. About two weeks before it went bad it would shift into third from second at full throttle. It must've been its way of making me think **** my transmission is getting better at 150,000 miles and then proving the joke was on me

You covered my commute to work right there. Lost 3 and 4, but only as I merged onto the highway. Made for an interesting drive. I already have a decent deal on a rebuilt 700 slowly in the works, but at this rate I may end up looking for a T56. heh

Oh man tinkering?
Trans Parts Indiana aka TPI?
They suck. build and sell garbage and they have screwed a few friends of mine as well. I dont use them for anything other than hard parts and thats only when I cant get them else where.
For trans' in our area try Jimmy's Transmission in Mundelein IL
Tell him Jeremy with the red Formula sent u.
It wont be cheap, but it will be the proverbial brick poophouse when it is done and it will work
later

always tinkerin, sounds to me that the tranny doesn't get enogh pressure to hold the clutches together. Before you burn up your 3-4 clutches completely with driving like you do, I would put a pressure gauge on it to check whats going on.
Worst case would be that the pump is weak.
Do you have at least the .500 boost valve in it? Do you have an upgraded 3-4 clutch pack installed?

Well, it's been a little over a year, but I finally had the trans rebuilt after shattering the planetaries. New red clutches, kolene steels, sun shell, servos, yada, yada. Went to the dragstrip for the first time in a year, only to have the same exact problem as before...NO 3rd at WOT. I have to get off of the throttle until 3rd engages then roll back into the throttle again. The trans shifts perfect while cruising the streets, but at the strip I have to shift at 7000 to make my ET. So, I put the gear selector in 3rd at 7000, but RPM's continue to climb rapidly to 8000... it won't upshift, so I am forced to lift until the trans lazily hits 3rd. Once in 3rd, I can go back to WOT and the trans pulls great all the way through the traps. What did my rebuilder do wrong? Someone has offered to fix the problem permanently for 600 bucks, but I've already dumped a ton of dough into it. What can my trans builder do to fix this thing right? This is a problem that plagues many 700R4 owners. Is there not a remedy for this issue?
