A question regarding carrier series importance
A question regarding carrier series importance
I've finally taken my camaro to the track. I'm addicted. Next step: drag radials. step after that, pick up rear-end pieces.
I've currently got the factory G92 equiped rear end but at this time it's only got junkyard gears in it since I've broken a pinion gear once and another time I broke the snout off a carrier.
I also have an 83 donor car that has a rear in it. Question is, if I build from scratch, retaining basically just the housing, do I have to worry about what series carrier it has? Did they use all the same housings? It would make sense that they did but I wanted to verify. I can either take it very easy on the car and then this winter build up the rear that's in the camaro or I can start building the other rear now.
What is everyone's opinion on my dilemma?
Thanks in advance.

The series carrier doesn't care about the housings. All you need to know is what gears were originally on the carrier to determine what gears you need to use when going to a deeper ratio,
If you have a carrier that had 2.77 gears, you're not going to be able to install a normal set of 3.73 gears on it. The 2.77 gears would be on a 2 series carrier and the 3.73 would need a 3 series unless you bought the thicker gear set or used a spacer.
It's all going to depend on what series carrier you have to determine the gears you're going to need to fit that carrier. Other than that, everything will bolt together from the 2 diffs.
If you decide to ever upgrade to 28 spline axles, you'll need to find/buy a 28 spline carrier.
