'85 3.42 ten bolt fit my '89 IROC???

I currently have a 1989 IROC with an open rear end, I think 2.73's. I don't know if it is 10 bolt or 9 bolt. I think it is 10 bolt.

I am curious if a 3.42 open 10 bolt rear would fit on my car?

Would it simply swap right in?

Also, I would eventually want to upgrade it to a posi. To do that would I only need a new carrier or whatever it is called for it? And with a new carrier, would I need a stage 3 or what?

If somebody could help me out that would be great.

Thanks,
Tony

Yes.

Yes.Depending on what brakes are on the car,and what brakes the new rear is setup for?

Yes.Generally a rebuild kit is a good idea as well. You can do just the carrier with new bearings though.

Series 3?Depends on the gears you are going to get.

Well the rear end i would be getting comes with no brakes, does that matter, or is it better?

As for a rebuild kit, I dont want that right now, if I wanted new gears, i would just do it to my rear end.

All i want is a new carrier and i guess new bearings. If i kept the 3.42 gears would i need series 3? Also if i eventually upgraded gears to 3.72's would i need a series 3 or bigger? how about 4.10's?

And when i do put posi in if i do, i will leave it at 3.42 gears.

If I put posi in and say in like 3 or so years i watn higher gears, can i just get new gears and replace them?

Why waste your time & money on that rear. Spend some time searching for a 1989 9-bolt with the good set of rear brakes and the ratio & Limited Slip you want.

I guess that is why I am posting this. I dont know much of anything about rear ends. All I know is that I dont have posi and I have 2.XX gears and that blows, lol.

But I am open to suggestions from everybody. And price ranges would be good too.
