ZF LT1 in a 3rd gen?
ZF LT1 in a 3rd gen?
Hi my dad is upgrading his tranny to handle handle more power he has a 90 zr-1. He is gonna give me his zf tranny for my 88 z-28. I'm already putting an LT1 into this and I know the LT1 corvettes used this same tranny. So my question is has anyone done some thing like this and what will I need. I figure I will need the bellhousings and such from gm to convert the zr-1 zf into an lt1 zf, But will there be other things (crossmembers, new tunnel, etc)

This has been rehashed quite a few times on this forum.
You're right; the LT5 ZF is mildly different than the LT1 ZF. Would it be worth your while to change the parts? Probably not. ZF is famously unwilling to sell parts for them easily.
Those boxes are nice, but even if you were starting with an LT1 ZF, they require a dual mass flywheel to be non-rattly; they cost tonnes more to install in an f-body than a T56, and any work on them is going to cost tonnes more. They don't fit the flook like the T56 does. All the Firehawk swap parts were sold out by SLP a few years back.
They're not rated for any more tq. than the T56, and the gear ratios are no better.
Your best move? Sell the ZF, use the funds to install a T56.

Everything from a Firehawk.
If you read all my posts in Third Generation F-Bodies > Tech Boards > Transmissions and Drivetrain >, you'll figure it out.
But I guess you'd prefer to find out the hard way.
