I need help to really find out the problem

I Was driving the car about 2 weeks ago and the car would not get out of first gear. It would reve up and not go into second. I would have to let off the pedal to bring it back down. I ajusted the TV cable and everything started working better. 1 week later, I was driving on the freeway and noticed the car was doing the same thing only this time the problem was happening in 3rd gear. I got off the freeway to see what was happening. when I accelerate it shifts to second just fine. now when it tries to shift into third gear, it reves up and will come down very slow. I changed the TV cable for the one i got from the dealer and it is still doing the same thing. I canot drive this car over 45 MPH because it will not shift into third gear. It dose not sound or feel like slipage it just reves up when trying to go into third gear. I went to a tranny shop and without the guy putting it up on the rack he told me that the clutches for third gear are worn and the car needs a rebuild or new tranny. I wanted to confirm this with the board before I do anything. what am I experincing? could there be a simple problem thats being overlooked? How much will the rebuild range? Is it cheaper to find a low milage tranny and just do a swap in and out. Please help. I have a automatic trannyThank you.

i'm sorry to say but he is probably correct. cost of a rebuild depends on what you have done. if you go with a used one, unless you know the history of the tranny in queston, it is a shot in the dark. it could be as bad as the one you have.

yeah, clutches are gone, almost 99% sure. Like 87zjeff said, shot in the dark on a replacement. As for a rebuild, could range from 1500 to 3000 depending on who does it, how well, and what needs to be done.

Now I have been talking to some trany guys who said the Valve body may need to be replaced an the trany may not require a rebuild. What is the valve body and why are they saying this? alsowhat are the signs of a bad valve body and is this easy to change?

the valve body is under the transmission pan. it is easy to change provided you get the checkballs back in the right place. it is what controls the shift characteristics of hte transmission. most likely, if the valve body was the problem, it wouldn't shift at all. but it is trying to shift and isn't going in to 3rd. i have had this exact same thing happen to me. if it was shifting late/hard/ not at all, i would say valve body also. but it is trying to shift which tells me it is the 3/4 clutch pack.
