Looking for a new auto-transmission
Looking to replace my crap 3-speed auto that came with my 82 Trans am. The 700R4 currently does look too appealing so I was just wondering what is a recommended 4-speed w/overdrive auto transmission for my car?

They only have problems if theyre high mileage or havent been taken care just like any other transmission. really your only other option would be a 4l60e which is basically a 700r4 but electronically controlled

most '87 and up 700r4's are electronic lock-up. it was the early ones that had the tcc valve train in the valve body. either way, it will have to have some kind of electrical signal to provide power to the lock-up solenoid. most '87 and later it was done by computer.

wrong!! the '87 and up use the ecm to lock-up the torque convertor. the aux. valve body does nothing more than act as a cusion of sorts. i am using an '86 model transmission in my '87 camaro. my original tranny had an aux. valve body. the '86 model does not. my tc still locks up when it is supposed to. some '86 and earlier valve bodies used a valve train in the valve body itself to do a hydraulic activated lock-up. most '87 and up is all ecm. disconnect your connector and see if your tc still lock up. all of the 700's need a 12v power source to activte the lock-up solenoid. in the '87 and later, this is controlled primarily by the ecm as the later valve bodies had this valve train eliminated.

so your tranny doesn't have an electrical connector at all? if it is not used then somebody has put an eraly valve body on it. all 700's still have a tcc valve in the pump. but they all require a solenoid to do the actual lock up unless it has been modified somehow. the early 700's had the valve train in the valve body to lock it up but it still required an electrical current to activate the solenoid. some do it by using a switch to ground the solenoid. the aux. valve body cusions the initial shift into gear from park or neutral.

a good 700r4, a built 700r4, or a taken care of 700r4 will give you no problems. Espically if you aren't putting out tons of power. I have a pretty modified engine and have no problems with my stock 700r4.
