drive and overdrive mesed up

Car: 1990 Camaro RS
Engine: 3.1L v6
Transmission: 700r4 auto
drive and overdrive mesed up
went to put it in to drive yesterday and the tranyn grinding and then made a loud clunk noise. now wen im in drive or overdrive or 2nd the transmission wont catch. but if i put it in first it will and then i can shift into 2nd drive and overdrive and the gears will shift fine. but once i come to a stop again i have to put it in first to get started. any ideas? your help is greatly appreciated.
