200C vs 700R4?

I am contemplating rebuilding my 200c tranny or just getting a rebuilt 700R4 for my 82 TA. I know the 700R4 is a 4 speed but is there really a clear advantage to just getting a rebuilt 700R4 as opposed to keeping my 200C.

I would consider the 2004R. I had an 82 crossfire Z28 that had the 200C that I replaced with the 2004R. There's a clear advantage with going this route. Overdrive gear and full throttle upshifts. Now everyone will tell you the 2004R is weaker than the 700R4. Ask the Grand National guys about that.

200R4 or 700R4 either will be well worth swapping in over the 200c. The 200R4 is better but both can be made failry equal.

I still cant beleive I sold my 200c to a guy for $200

Hi,
I am doing the 200c to 4l60e conversion. My 200c is in perfect condition and is still in the car. The 200c was build by AAMCO back in 92 and has been completely trouble free ever since. So I would like to find a nice home for the 200c. If your car is in a restored condition, then keeping a 200c in it would make it worth more.

If its a daily driver, then go for the 200c to 700r4 or 4l60e conversion. The main reason I say to go with the 700r4/4l60e route is due to the much higher first and second gear ratios(increase acceleration). You will also get better gas milage due to the overdrive.

If you are intersted in my 200c, please PM me.

I just called Aamco and they told me roughly anywhere between $800-1500 (CAD) to rebuild my 200C depending on what's wrong. My tranny is in pretty good condion, it just wouldn't hurt a rebuild, it does have some delays when shifting gears. The guy recommended a turbo 350 over the 700R4, I dont know too much about the turbo 350, anyone have any experience with it?

"it does have some delays when shifting gears",

Is it getting worse. If not, then don't fix it.

I think I might just get a new tranny all together, I really want the overdrive gear.

Oh wait, I forgot to mention my speedo and odometer don't work. I bought the car like that and when I took it in for inspection they suspect an internal gear in the tranny.

Well they are probably wrong. Do you have cruise controll? There a cruise unit located on the drivers side front of the engine bay, has two cables, one from the trans and one going into the car to the speedo head. It's where I would look first the internals like to crap out but it can be gutted and made to read again.

I honestly am not sure if I have Cruise control. Whatever labels that were on the car are well faded.

No Speedo, no vss, no torque convertor lockup, causes excessive heat in transmission. Excessive heat mean slow shifting. The cruise control servo in located on the front of the driver side front wheel housing. It will have two cables, vacum lines, and wiring running to it.

Going from 200c to 700r4 will required replacement of drive shaft, torque arm, etc. You should first fix the speedo problem.
