Quick Question on # of splines
Currently my 89 RS has a V6 in it. I read on here that the automatic transmission in it was the 700r4 and the 30 spline, then I read that it is a 27 spline tranmission that is in the V6 camaros. I would like to know as if it is a 30 spline I will be rebuilding it with high perf. parts and a shift kit and putting in a V8. So please help me with this, because if it is just the 27 spline I will prob just get either a th350 or th400

Ok then another quick question, What would all of you recomend for an automatic transmission for my V8 swap? Should I just rebuild my 700r4 or get a different one?

700-R4 changed to 30 spline in the middle of model year 1984. You have 30.
The 60degree V6 came with a 700-R4 that will not bolt up to a SBC. Get a good 700-R4 core non-electronic from model year 1988 through 1992, or passenger car 1993. The valvebody changes for 88 and is the "good" one.

uhmm make sure youre talking about the right shaft int eh trans
input or output ?
outputs are all 27 on all the trannies across the board all years except for the th400's
27 spline outs
the 700r4 inputs were 27 through 84 and then 30 in 85-up
just making sure youre all talking about the same shafts here.

the 700r4 still used the 27 spline input shaft in the v-6 units. they still use them as late as '98. the v-8 units went from 27 spline to 30 spline in mid '84.

and 87-up are the improved 700s with aux units and a few other goodies,
not 88...
look for the "rainbow"(arched) casting line on the case above the entire area where the cooling lines connect
cant miss it
thats the 87 up ones
good luck

"yep 84 was changeover on the splines of the input"
only for the v-8's. the 6 cyl. still has 27 splines on the input shaft unless it is a 4.3 liter. the 4.3 liter is the only v-6 that has 30 splines.
