What's the difference between TBI and TPI 700R4 autos?
Hi guys, I am looking for a 700R4 to use behind a TBI'd 305 I will be piecing together from parts. I see that the Hollander interchange shows that the 305/350 TPI cars use a different transmission than the 305 TBI cars. What is the difference? Can I use a TPI transmission in case I upgrade later, and get it to work with the TBI? Are there certain year range transmissions that will/will not work? I would assume that 85 or 86-90 should at least interchange? Will 700R4 autos from a caprice or something else TBI work? I will be using a TBI ecu and I do burn EPROMS.

as far as im aware a 700R4 is much the same as another from another car altough they were better after certern year. i always thought tbi's used a diferant gearbox altogether

if it is a v-8 700r4, it will interchange. the only thiing you need to look out for is the speedo gear differences and the tail housing if it came out of another vehicle. the "87 and later had heavier components than earlier models. also, the TV cable is different between the TBI models and the TPI models from what i have heard.
as far as i know, the TBI camaro's still used the 700r4. unless it has been swapped, a camaro that had an automatic overdrive had a 700r4 installed regardless of the motor.

Their is only 2 different 700R4s (AFAIK)
The 60* and 90* bellhousing style. I guess it could be 4 different ones if you count the 87 up 700R4s which are a revised version of the earlier ones but nonetheless still identicle on the outside.

Different governor settings; different valvebody calibrations. Stuff like that. Nothing wrong with a TBI 700-R4, but the TPI one may have a more performance oriented valvebody cal. Nothing that can't be fixed but...
