why do these cars go into gear so hard?

is there a reason for that? mine clunks real loud into reverse but not drive. when i go into drive though it goes so hard the car moves and kicks stones..a little. is all that normal? all 3 of my thirdgens ( 2v8s one v6) have been like this but mine seems worse. its like im not holding down the brakes all the way..but i am. if it was a broken mount (common right?) would that be doing this? if not treated could this hurt the trans?

The 87 1/2 and up transmissions had an aux valve body added. This help to reduce this. Pre 87's bang pretty hard sometimes. Later are not too bad.

Well what he said plus +

Wear in the trans will cause this

Doing it right after engine started will do this(idle high)

Improperly adjusted rear brakes will do this

Broken trans mount? U betcha will do this.

Improperly adjusted idle (aka TPS and IAC will cause this)

Vaccum leaks(high/er idle)

Check your trans mount and gi thru all the IAC/TPS setting procedures and see if this helps out any.

Some of it wont go away, but u shouldnt bang into gear all of the time

later

worn rear end, worn u joint

if there is a noise anyways, clunk or bang

if it doesnt make a noise like that then your idle speed may be up too high

have to remember these cars are lighter in the rear,

they all seem to hit hard into gear

jut how they are, compared to other/heavier vehicles

good luck

it has been ok since i put new brake pads on the back. i did the master cyl too. since i didnt have much of a reserve. the night i posted this i had done all this. it took a day for it to get better. its like it adjusted itself. either way its all good now....but a new question....

how come these take forever 2 go into gear in cold weather. well..forever is exadgerating...when i put it into drive itll take a second or two for it to do thud into gear..u know like any car does. my old v6 firebird with an extremely healthy tranny in it did the same thing...is it a normal 700r4 thing??

You said replacing the rear brake pads helps your clunking problem? I guess I don't really see how it is related...
