differential clunk

i installed a richmond posi- powertrax this summer and i noticed it makes a clunk when it engages out of the posi. sometimes it seems like the posi has a hard time dissengaging from one another and it makes a loud clunk when it disengages. any ideas? is this normal? or should a new kind of differential fluid be put in?

Let me add to this. I have a Detroit Tue Trac posi and it makes a strange sound when I slow down. The sound is only heard when there is no acceleration being put on the rear end. It sounds like the gears have to much play.

I wonder if n8sz28 has to much play in the gears. Could the bolts be loose? What concerns me about his and mine is a faulty unit. We both need help.

Not to be Caption Obvious or anything, but you did add Posi additive to your gear lube, right? Just checking. I've found that the GM stuff works best, and I usually add 1 or 2 bottles of it to my diff(depending on which rear). Often, even with synthetic fluid that says it doesnt need additive, a bottle of additive helps.

if it's the powertrax locking differential, it doesn't need posi fluid, the manual says to use regular gear oil. mine used to make a clunking noise when i suddenly accelerated or let off the gas quickly. i believe this is due to something like 15-30* of free play in the locker, it talks about it right in the manual. if it seems excessive, i would suggest pulling the cover from the rear and checking it out. it turns out i broke one of the springs in it and that was contributing to strong clunks and a loud popping noise when i turned.
