The th350 can be built pretty tough but you have to overdrive

the th400 is very strong by itself and can be made even stronger

the 700r4 is a good dependable trans from 89 and later and you get the overdrive. This can also be built to be beaten on pretty regularly

the BW T5 is an ok manual trans with OD that will literally explode if there is too much torque and traction.

the BW T56 is an excellent trans with the double OD (5th and 6th) but has weak shift forks that will bend or break with heavy use. There are many companies that sell steel (viper) shift forks at a very reasonable price but installing them is a bitch.

the ZF 6-speed which came with the vettes and the vipers is the best of the standards. It can handle 450 ft/lb of torque all day long but it is a hassle to install in anything but a vette.

Of course you also have companies like richmond that sell standards with any range of gear selections and can be built to handle serious horsepower.

If your looking for a trans you can pull at the junkyard and beat the living **** out of it, your best bet will be TH350 or TH400.

My current TH350C was a junkyard pull about 10 years ago, Believe me it hasnt had an easy life either. The lockup was never wired in so its running fairly high temps but has never gave a single problem.

The TH700R4s are a very weak trans in stock form especially the pre 87s. But they can also be built to handle reasonable ammounts of power.
