700R4 to T56....Dropping steering column?

The 700R4 to T56 seems doable to me...however....the whole part about dropping the steering column, making the wholes for the pedals...etc...is kinda scaring me. Could someone either ease my mind telling me that its not to bad...or that it is horrible and I should just get a pro-built trans.

Dude, it's not a problem at all. The swap is pretty easy. You don't really have to drop the steering column either. Some think it makes it easier to get to the pedals, but it's not bad at all. Plus dropping the steering column only takes unbolting two screws. Just get a deep socket, unscrew the pedal bracket bolts(4 plus 1 up top), pull it out, and put the new one in. tighten all 5 bolts up and THEN drill the holes for the master cylinder. The pedal bracket for the clutch will serve a perfect template for the hole locations. Cut a hole for the shifter and the rest is cake! E-mail if you have questions. geowitz@wam.umd.edu

Hmm...doesnt sound too bad...that was really the only thing keeping me from going with a Tremec T56 instead of the easy Pro-Built trans. I need to get back on the ball and start spending more money on my car.....im hoping that by early next year I will have my car done (and it'll be damn sweet)

No need to drop the column. Ive done this swap on two different thirdgens and didnt do it either time. I am thinking about converting my 89 from T56 to a stout 700R4 if I can find someone who wants to buy the T56 from me or possibly trade the T56 for a good 700.

What's the big deal about dropping the column? It takes like 20 minutes to pull the whole thing out of one of these cars, and maybe 45 to put it back in. You'll save more time than taht from not having it in your way while you do the pedal thing.

To drill the hole, mount the pedal assembly; there will be 2 brackets coming off of it that need to bolt with the clutch master cylinder bolts; mark those places on the firewall; and use the MC gasket as the template. Piece of cake.

I concur with RB. If I had a buck for everytime I had the column out of the car I'd be a rich man. Just DROPPING it is cake, removing the whole thing is a little more work but still not difficult.

I recently did a pedal refresh (new clutch pedal, new plastic bushing) on my car and can't imagine working on them with the column in there.
