just picked up an old 12 bolt...

yesterday after an 8 hour road trip i finally got my 12 bolt home. it was out of an old truck it supposedly has an eaton posi in it and 3.08's. i mainly bought it for the posi but found out i cant go over a 3.40 gear with this posi so i might sell it.

would it be worth it to get all the machine work done to this axel and still get new EVERYTHING?? or would it be worth it to start over again.

also, about how much is this thing worth??

Sell it.

1: The truck diff is a lot wider than a third gen so it would take a lot of work to have it shortened to fit.

2: Truck 12 bolt diffs use different gears that car 12 bolts. The pinion is a different size

3: You can get thicker gears to use a 3 series gear ratio on a 2 series carrier but is it really worth it?

Value? Whatever someone is will it pay for it.

i'd rate a 12 bolt from a truck as next to worthless. i've had 2 i gave away.

the truck axles are basically same width as the full size cars, B bodies and such, super close, some exactly same width,
many ppl have put a full size car diff right under a truck with very minor welding, especially the caddy disc rear ones,

the truck 8.875" pinion stems are smaller than car ones, weaker

two totally different 12 bolts here

need to find a 72 older car and yank 12 bolt from that

or use an 8.5" from just about anything

pretty much any axle is better than a truck 8.875"

even a dana 44

truck 12 bolts were from '64-82
they are the irregular shaped diff cover ones

sell the posi on ebay or truck board for about 100 or a little more, then go look up an 8.5" or 44 or 60 or older 9" or car 8.875

good luck

sell it, it's of no use for a thirdgen. No tq arm mount, spring perches, lca or panhard brackets. By the time you spend money on axles, shortening the tubes, a set of real gears, fabbing the brackets and making a tq arm work you could have bought a 12 bolt for the car from strange.

well no 12 bolt will work on a thirdgen without the required modifications. buying a 12 bolt from strange is much more than i could get all the work done locally for if i had a 12 bolt to start off with. i bought this rear mainly because of the posi thats in it, and i can sell just the posi for more than i bought the 12 bolt for.

anyone wanna buy a 12 bolt?
