700r4 won't shift- please help

My transmission won't shift out of second into third. When it reaches the peak of second gear it just revs as if it were in neutral. I believe that someone previously installed a shift kit in the car if it helps. Under heavy acceleration it has always shifted hard and fast going from second into third. I checked the fluid and it was a little burnt. I changed out the fluid and even added a quart of slick 50 trans fluid. No change. Bought a new govenor from GM and had it installed. No effect. The mechanic also said that the tv cable was fine.

No idea if it could be something else simple and cheap or if I need a complete rebuild. Please Help!! Thanks

It is shifting into third, it's just that the 3/4 clutch packs are gone. They are the weakest link in the 700R4.

RBob.

RBob's got it right. My trans is all apart on my bench for the same reason. I'm gonna put some better than stock clutch packs in the planetary sets to avoid another annoying R&R.

In my area, to remove it, rebuild it, upgrade it (somewhat) new remann torque converter and fluid usually goes for $1,000- $1500. Closer to $2,000 if done at the chevy dealer with a gm trans.

300-400 for every thing cheaper if you dont get a shift kit or high stall

DO IT YOUR SELF

Thanks for the replies. I am going to look into getting a engine tranny combo. Possibly an LS1 or LS6 with a six speed. As for the current engine and tranny I might save them and rebuild them both myself as time permits. I've never worked on a transmission before and would like to get the car back on the road as soon as possible.
Thanks again, Josh.

If you're mechanically inclined then grab a book, buy a kit (I just bought a complete kit on E-bay for $95.00) read the book first then dissamble and lay all the parts out in order of removal and then match all the new goodies up with the old and after cleaning the case and everything else reassemble in the reverse order. Its not that bad.

heh....yeah its not that hard....If you dont replace all the seals and the clutch packs in the input drum , oh, and that pesky piston seal at the bottom of the case ....
