best way to do mods

I am about to do some valve body mods which require me to remove the valve body.

I also have to remove the preasure regulator assembly the govenor and the servo.

I was wondering if anyone had done these things and should I just remove the trans from the car completely or should I do it underneath the car on Jack stands.

So experenced advice would be appreciated
Thanks

I would't yank the trans for those mods. you'll be alright, lift would be nice but floor jack will work too.

Servo may require removing rear trans mount and shifting to one side, but all can be done from underneath.

do I need a special tool to get the servo cover out and what about the gov cover.

The only reason that I wanted to know is in the instructions they say that the valve body is eaiser to do with the trans out of the car. it say that when you drop the valve body parts can drop out.

thank you for the info so far

Yes, installing the valve body is easier out of the car, but that doesn't take into account removing the transmission. If you take your time, reinstalling it from underneath will work. You just have to be careful to keep the checkballs in place as you lift it into place. There's a tech article on sethirdgen.org on swapping the servo. No special tools are required.

Can't help you on the gov cover. I hear it's accessible but don't have personal experience.

I read to use some grease on the check *****. one of the main things I am worrying about is the preasure regulator assembly.

When people talk about there detent cable not working properly it is usually the Tv boost valve rattling around inside the front pump and not applying enough preasure to downshift the trans.

This assembly is straight up and down. I am just bieng cautious.

When I arrived in Spain after Construction Mechanic "A" school there was a E-5 who was on his 2nd trans rebuild because he did not know what he was doing.

The chief saw my scores and asked if I would like to help. I did not help I took over. First of all he was using a dodge book for a 350 trans. Needless to say 3 days later the trans shifted like new.

On the other hand I rebuilt a 700r4 without any special tools and it worked fine for about 4 days chirpin and all. this was at home.
on the forth day I was taking it up and down the street and chirping the %$#& out of 2nd. went to put the car up put it in reverse and there was no reverse.

So I am not as cocky as I use to be.

Are you installing a transgo shift kit with new boost/pressure valves? They'll go straight in. The worst that can happen is they don't fall out when the ring clips are removed and you'll have to reinstall the pan and crank the engine to get the fluid to push them out. Extremely unlikely.

Just make sure when you reinstall you get the ring clip on the right land. Note how far up in the bore it is. I've seen some posts where guys have set the clip in too low and had the pressure valve blow out into the pan.

If you don't yet have a kit, I'd recommend the one from Pro-built. It comes with new valves and the vette servo.

yeah I dodged the tv valve and then the rev valve hit me square in the eye. I did the valve body work and the preasure valve. the accum setup that I put in seems to be a lot beefer than stock.

now i have to do the servo and gov

Are you adjusting WOT shift points with the gov? Let me know how it goes. It's on my list of things to do also.

I had it all together and decided that I did not like the looks of the valves I pulled out of the valve body.

I took each valve apart cleaned and wet sanded with 2000 grit to get the flashing off the valve. I looks like someone overheated the trans at one point.

Started at 1:00 PM pulling rear end out of camaro. Got it into pontiac at 7:00 PM. Now I've got to pick up the 3:41 posi for the camaro later this week.

Just wanted you to know someone else was working today.

Pontiac rear end was toast so its demise has given me an excuse to upgrade the camaro's rear.

Most of those mods will not need any sort of special tools.... the governer case will come right off with a screwdriver or little wedge just be ver ginger with it and dont damage the sealing surface..... Vasaline works awsome for holding the check ***** and it will not damage the transmission after you have finished.

it was easier than I had expected. I do not like to go into things with a blindfold on. the directions made it out to be brain surgery.
