speedometer gear

When I bought my Formula, the guy I bought it from said that he had put a 700R4 from an Astro in the car, but when he hooked up the speedometer, the car wouldn't run. I have the old gear from the original tranny, would that work if it was put on or do I need some other new parts to make the speedo work? Thanks!

i would definitely put the original speedo drive and driven gears from the car on it to ensure the accuracy of the speedometer when you do get it working. there could have been something wrong with the gears from the astro. did the previous owner change the cable as well? he may not have gotten it pluged to the back of the speedometer good. i thought by "89 the birds had went to electronic pickups in the units so it could be a mis-match of parts.

Hmm doesn't sound as serious as I thought it might be. So if I change the cable and put the old gear on there I'll be ok?
