Vibration when OD Kicks in...

Hey guys, i havent driven my car since its under a cover for the winter, but i was just wondering if one thing it does it normal...

Usually i baby it, accelerating very slow..and it never goes above 2000 RPM's unless i want it to. When i get above whatever the MPH is 34 or 36 MPH that the torque coverter kicks in, and my car goes into overdrive...theres like a slight vibration/deep tone until i reach maybe like 40 MPH or so. My dad said its just the overdrive kicking in... I am just checking to make sure that there is nothing wrong and that nothing is gonna happen from it doing that.

I'd assume its just being in OD at too low of a speed. Low RPM's + OD = vibrations. You're just making the car "lug"

Is that nessacarily bad? I mean obviously i dont want to have my car lugging all the time, but is it alright if it does it every now and then as it shifts into OD?? Or should i be accelerating faster to avoid this???

What i am asking is is that little lug i might get every now and then when im accelerating pretty slow gona **** up my engine or other drivetrain components? I mean im not driving for an extended period w/ it lugging...maybe a few seconds at a time if it is 'lugging'...Should i be worried or change my driving habits?

thats torque converter shutter, your lock up clutch is toast in the converter, try having the torque converter replaced

does it have any acceleration lag or top end power loss?

im willing to bet that stator is damn near freewheeling in both directions too

If the tranny shifts ok and converter locks/unlocks, I'd say the change in vibes and tone would be muffler and exhaust system resonance.

The Flowmaster and 3-inch exhaust piping in my IROC have a couple of rpm bands where the sound pulses make the car vibrate like a tuning fork. At about 1500 rpms, the vibes are intense enough to set off car alarms when I drive through my neighborhood. Heh, they hate my IROC when it rumbles by at 4 a.m.

Quite possibly your Camaro is exhibiting a characteristic, instead of a mechanical problem.

Also, keep in mind that automatic transmissions will change gears to avoid "lugging" the engine to the point where engine damage might occur.

Thats what i originally thought it was...and my dad said the noise happened when the overdrive kicks in...so its definately not out of line to say its just the exhaust note. Its hard to describe, but its like a real mellow, deep, tone. I mean im sure the 700r4's TC has problems but my car has 48k miles and has been babied its entire life...i would have trouble believing its 'torque converter is toast.' Is it possible that what i am hearing is just the exhaust note???

Have someone knowledgable about ThirdGens and without any financial interest in your car, drive it and give you an informed diagnostic evaluation.

My dad was a mechanic for GM (mainly chevy buick and pontiac) from 82-89 and when we first got the car and were driving it he said that noise/note was when the overdrive kicked in. I guess if he didn't think anything of it there probably isnt anything wrong...

i was just looking for second opinions though. Nevermind. Thanks for all your help guys.

Doesnt that in the long run hurt your tranny's life, I mean I wanna drive in D all the time, but the only thing refraining me from doing that is the tranny life...I just keep it on OD all the time and A mack I think I know what you are talking about...

Except it happens in my car going up or down weavy/windy roads, and it happens at only certain areas, but whenever I let go the vibration stops immediately...

EDIT: U know, nevermind what I said about having it happen at only certain places...I know what you are talking about, it happens to me too, it happens directly at 1300rpm and it just keeps vibrating....

I would like to know what this is...

mine likes to shutter in od too...i have 3.73s too so the rpms are a bit higher even at like 40mph in od and it still shutters. But i know that my torque converter plug is destroyed and the plug on the tranny is ruined too. Its pluged in, but its all cracked and screwed up. Im gunna replace it soon and see if it fixes it.

I was just about to post this topic too because i was afraid my tranny was slipping in od...hopefully its just the fact that the torque converter isnt locking up..because that would be good news for me and the money in my bank

Also, when i let off the gas...even if i have it down very very slightly..as soon as i let off, the vibration goes away just like he said above

Mine does this lugging as well at lower rpm's - especially on a slight incline. And it's worse when the fluid level is lower. Check the fluid? I do as mentioned above - shift into D - this raises RPM's and reduces the lugging - and I know it's time to add some fluid (I obviously have a slight leak - but with no heated facilities, it'll have to wait for warmer weather).
