700R4 - what cars?

Probably been asked before, but my search came up dry.

What other cars/what years had the 700R4? A neighbor is in need of a cheap used 700R4 for a V8 and not sure what else to look at in my local bargain trader rag besides Camaros/Birds. I have my bad tranny, so I have tailhousing to swap if needed.

I'm assuming V8 Caprices, Regals, Monte's ... was there a Olds Cutlass or Delta 88? What about trucks? Cadi's? I see 4.9l V8 Cadi's in these years. Any help appreciated.

I am going to turn it aropund. I am trying hard to think of cars that DID NOT have 4 speed trannies installed. All the way back to 82 when the th200 i think c, came out? There were 700r4's from the mid 80's on in so many chevies i cant begin to count.

BUT; realize this, we are talking REAR wheel drives, if you need a donor. Realize this also. All 700r4 are not alike. Those behind 60 degree v6 motors and 4 bangers are NOT what you want. The bell housing doesnt fit to begin with. The trannies were also not built to handle the punishment of a v8. The ones behind the (I THINK) 90 degree motors like the 3.8, 4.3, 305 and 350 are what you need. So Its rear wheel drive, 90 degree v motor.

I dont think tailshaft housing problems happen unless you find a rare th200--- they came with a shorter? tailshaft, I think. Ido know they are not the same.

Simple point is that you bring tape measure under the car next time and measure from engine back to end of tailshaft. Then measure the donor. I seldom visit the boneyard without the old tape measure and diagrams of what I need. I also check popular PARTS WEB SITES for needed info. For instance, to find out that the big caprice uses wheel bearings the same as our camaros. Makes interesting thinking about brake donor cars, cause if the backing plate for the 11 or 12 inch drum will bolt to the 10 bolt axle, I dont need 9.5 inch disc brakes. I'll settle for Big Drums.

Or, if the spindle can be modified to fit a 12 inch caprice caliper, then why pay for fancy aftermarket stuff. The rotor will go cause the bearing and such are the same. Dont quite know the answers but its worth investigating. May be far off base, but I want to stop better and dont race.

Grab one out of a late 80's cargo or custom van. Easy to pull, cheap and many to pick from. Last one I plucked out even had a vette servo in it.
