I posted Thursday re: the 1988 2.8L Camaro we had purchased with problems. We purchased and last night replaced the Throttle valve cable. My husband pulled out the governor gear, and said it is worn, but no teeth are missing.
Now, we still have the same problem. When in drive the car shifts up and down smoothly without shuttering or shifting hard. However when you manually shift it into the OD detent, it reacts as if it is in neutral. So what do we try now?
Thanks for the help, love this board, as I have learned a lot already.

I am not sure that I understand the question. Did you lose 3rd and 4th gear? Or did you lose all foward gears when the shifter is in od detent?
We lose it all! Same as if we shifted into neutral! Just like we have 2 neutral detents.

Perhaps it's the shift cable that needs adj. What happens when you put it in 1st ? Does it stay in 1st or shift to 2nd? If you haven't serviced the trans yet, you might want to go ahead and drop the pan and check the filter. No telling how long it's been since that was done. GM had a problem with the filters dropping down from the valve body when the seal got old and hard. I've even seen people put coat hanger wire across under the filter to hold it up. Either way, when the filter drops down the trans doesn't suck the fluid as well. They have a new design the works better now.
You may have lost the lo-roller clutch.
I assume that the "lo roller clutch" means new transmission time.
I have access to a wrecked '85 with 2.8L and a manual 5 speed. What all would have to be changed to put the manual into our 1988?

The lo- roller clutch is in the middle of the trans. It is an inexpensive part that is sometimes changed during a rebuild. I say sometimes because most low buck trans builders do not change the lo-roller or foward sprag. If they check good, they reuse them. I put new spag and lo-roller in ever one I do. Cheap insurance. These 2 items are holding devices. They allow something to turn in one direction, and lock up in the other direction. When they break, they cannot lock and the part overruns.
Thank you "floorguy", you have been a ton of help.
Since we live 12 miles out of town, we have been able to run to and fro and it does fine, just does not shift into OD. But we know that is a temporary thing.
We would like to know how much of the 85 electronics we would have to transfer if we put in the 5spd manual.

Check the diy prom section to answer the electronics question. To my knowledge, the only computer control that affects trans is torque converter lock up. If you use the auto prom, with the stick installed, it will send a ground trigger that will simply go nowhere. Should be fine.
Thank you "floorguy" for your speedy responses. I have posted my question over there.
