Rear End 3.42 to 3.73

Ok i'm new at the rear end swapping so i just needed a few pointers from some people that might have already done this, so what do i need to replace, and how much $$ will it cost? Right now i have a stock 3.42 rear end and i just dont have what i want so i'm going to a 3.73 any ideas?

last summer i rebuilt a rear end and it came out to about 1500. but that was taking a used rear out 91 fire bird, sand blasting, painting, new diff, new gears, new axles, new brakes, new brakelines, etc, so all i had to do was pop her up on in there. just gears and diff id say your looking at around 700. i wouldnt bother with used differentials. do it right the first time so you dont have to go back and fix it.

I'm opposite bitchin85camaro. I got all quality jy parts and put my rearend together for less than $400. Auburn posi, 28 spline axles, ta girdle, and pbr brakes. I just could never get the right speedo gears. Its a 10 bolt with a 7.5 ring gear, putting in $1500 would get you close to a 9".

i agree that it was a bit too much, but i wanted to make sure it was perfect, and i got everything one part at a time so i didnt feel the burden of a 1500 part bill. to me used diffs are kinda like used trannys, you might get a good one, you may not. but ya, 1500 is pretty close to getting a 9''.

Lotta maze, not much cheese.

It might be different if you were going from 2.73 to 3.73.

For a street car, I doubt you'd notice a whole lot of difference. If it was a strip-only car, you might use it as a tuning aid, to get your big end RPMs where they need to be.

If you could do it yourself, it might be OK; but paying somebody to do that for you, your $$$ are probably better spent elsewhere, unless you just have about $1000 you're determined to spend this way.
