Modifying a stock 700r4 shifter
I read in a responce to a post a couple of days ago where somebody said something about b&m having a plate or a kit to modify a stock 700r4 floor shifter into a rachet shifter. I did a search and cant find the post now and I dont remeber who posted it. Anybody ever hear of this or know anything about it?

Hi all,
Modifying these shifters are not for the faint at heart. I just converted my orginal shifter over to overdrive in my 82 Firebird. The orginal detent brackets are welded in. So before you jump take a very hard look at it.

I'd be very interested in knowing how the installation went.
Can you only rachet up through the gears or can you racket down through the gears as well?
Let us know how well it works and how much it costs.
Thanks.

Not a true ratchet shifter. From the explination on their webpage they say, "you can bump the stick forward for each gear and not worry about overshifting." As in when you push forward, it won't allow you to go from 1 to 3 or OD, it'll stop at 2 and then require you to push down on the button to push it up to 2, then release button to then be able to push into 3, then push button to go into 4. Or at least that's how I see it as working. A ratchet shifter requires a lot more components than what is provided in this kit.
Maybe I'm wrong, and if I am I'll eat my words but I doubt it
. It's still nice because this will prevent people like me, who upshift manually, from thinking they're in 2 or 3 when infact in 4 and going into N over-reving the motor

That's how it looks like it works to me too, just based on the shape of the plate. Similar to the way the Hurst Quarter Stick shifters and others work.
JPrevost, can you clearify that up a little bit I'm not exactly sure what you mean. I understand how a true ratchet shifter works, but are you saying that with this kit, it would act as a rachet shifter only you would need to push the button when shifting through each gear rather than just hitting it forward?

It's pretty much as he said. Starting out in first, you can push forward into second, but it hits a stop and you can go no further until you press the button down. Then it will go forward into third, but can't go any further until the button is released.

It took a little while getting used to. In order to upshift from 1-2 you HAVE to press the lever to move the shifter up. To go from 2-D you just slap it up. To go from D-OD push the button and upshift again, and the same to go all the way to Park.
Downshifting is the same exact way just in the opposite direction. HTH
It definitely eliminates the chances of overshifting.
